Tenderloin opera company
Tenderloin Opera Company is a music and theater group based in Providence, RI, made up of currently and formerly homeless people and their advocates. It was founded by playwright Erik Ehn in San Francisco, and when it moved to Providence, we kept the name honoring the San Francisco neighborhood in which it was founded. Each week TOC hosts writing workshops for homeless members of the Providence community, their friends, and advocates at Mathewson St. Church in downtown Providence. The members of TOC write the story, compose music, and perform one opera each year based on stories of homelessness, abuse, addiction, hope, love, and redemption. We also perform at various social and political events, protests, and marches about issues related to homelessness.
*We are proposing a partnership and exchange with Los Angeles-based community singing and activist group Urban Voices Project, and have been invited to speak and perform at the Arts In Society Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, June 2019.
