Cavepaintings
for double bass trio and video (2005)

Edited video images I shot of elk in the wild in Northeast Michigan are projected directly onto the musicians and their large instruments as they perform. I controlled the playback of three video channels live in performance to be able to react to the particular timing of the performers. My aim was to recreate my dumbstruck awe in presence of these beautiful creatures, similar in my mind to the reverential images of animals placed in the dwellings of man in his early history.

Video documentation of excerpts from
April 28, 2005 performance
Duderstadt Center Video Studio, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Performers: Robert Lester, Miranda Hill, Pearl Alexander (double bass)
Jacob Richman (live video processing)
