Verdant Vibes, the Providence, RI-based new music ensemble and concert series that I co-direct with my partner Kirsten Volness, is working on our next season for this Winter/Spring. We received a generous grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts to help fund the season. Our call for scores (which closed Aug 1st) received over 400 SUBMISSIONS! Kirsten and I more than lucky for the response and support we've gotten for our second season. We have plenty of music and art projects to look/listen through in the next couple of weeks, and will post the line-up and performance dates shortly.

I've recently been asked to curate two gallery shows in the fall and spring that I am really excited about.
First is at the University of Rhode Island Art Gallery and will take place in Nov./Dec. of this year. I was asked by colleague and gallery directory Prof. Bob Dilworth to curate a show that focuses on performance and time-based media from Rhode Island artists. I plan to focus on the both the performance and related artwork (2D art, costumes, video) of Providence-based performance and multimedia artists. I have also been asked by Jasmine Higgins, curator of lectures and performances at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to curate a performance next May for their Sound Bites series. I am planning to present some of my own performance and installation work, along with other friends and artists from Providence and Boston. I'm thrilled about these two opportunities! Check back later for details/more info. I made a video to accompany the Morton Feldman piece The Viola in my Life (1) at a performance by Parallax Ensemble at Aurora in Providence on Feb. 6th. The show really went well. I'll include a documentation from that performance with the video soon, but here's a mock up I made using a performance from another performance of this beautiful Feldman piece.
Tenderloin Opera Company had a great time presenting and performing at the New Music Gathering conference at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. TOC members also found time to work and perform at the Franciscan Center free kitchen and homeless services center, make some friends, see some sites, eat some crabs, and have a great time! Here are some pics, and video of our performance at the NMG on the "Building Communities" panel.
I've had to take a brief hiatus from my project Windeye with Andie, but am back at it working on a music video version of this multi-faced piece for her upcoming audio visual album. More soon...
Windeye Interlude 2 from Jacob Richman on Vimeo. Kirsten Volness and I were recently awarded a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts to put on a small new music festival in Providence. The festival is called Verdant Vibes, and will include a call for scores/new music from RI-based artists. We will have a launch party/concert with the Verdant Vibes Ensemble and friends (including Blevin Blectum and JPA Falzone) at Aurora in early December, and a concert of selected works from the call for scores in Spring 2016 at the South Side Cultural Center in Providence. More details soon!
Tenderloin Opera Company has been selected to present at the 2016 New Music Gathering in Baltimore. We will discuss how our program creates theater and music, how it presents the stories of homelessness in RI, and how it interacts with the homeless community and other outreach organizations. We hope to be able to bring as many members to the event and will run a fundraising campaign this Fall and Winter to help fund the modest travel expenses. More details soon! |
